SUPERMARKET chain Sainsbury’s is preparing to open two shops within a mile on the same Sheffield road.
The firm was given permission for a convenience store on Ecclesall Road, Banner Cross earlier this year.
Now it is planning another store further down Ecclesall Road, on the other side of Hunters Bar roundabout below Studio 557 restaurant.
It will open in the New Year.
Sheffield Council’s licensing board has granted permission for the store to trade 24 hours a day, despite neighbours’ objections.
There is no date for the opening of the Banner Cross premises, which are still under construction .
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “As they serve such small and distinct areas, it is possible to operate more than one store in densely populated areas such as Ecclesall Road.
