Sheffield’s Povey Farm at Norton has become the first in the region to qualify for carbon neutral status.
Owners Stephen and Karen Thompson have just completed their eco project with the installation of a wind turbine.
“Despite the weather, Northern Powergrid frying the farm electrics and a crane going off the lane, we got the turbine commissioned without significant delay!” says Stephen, who markets his pork as Moss Valley Fine Meats.
He and Karen are the fourth generation to run the family pig farm. Meat is butchered on-site and then supplied to restaurants, cafés and delis across the area.
“The farm consumes a large amount of electricity and we wanted protection against future energy prices while also improving our green credentials,” says Stephen.
The farmhouse was granted ‘super home’ status after installation of a woodburner and solar panels. Now the new turbine is generating even more energy.
“The turbine is much quieter than we expected and now the butchery is carbon neutral too, probably a first for Yorkshire,” he added.
