Busy year ahead at Don Valley Stadium
Rotherham's first ever night match at the Don Valley Stadium
BOSSES at Don Valley Stadium are optimistic about the coming year and have a ‘busy’ events programme – despite loss of income from regular football matches when Rotherham United move.
The Millers are moving to the New York stadium in Rotherham, which is set to be ready for the start of the new season in August.
Sheffield International Venues say a host of sporting events will remain, including Sheffield Eagles rugby league matches, track and field events, indoor athletics, gymnastics and indoor bowls.
The stadium is used for training by Hallamshire Harriers and City of Sheffield Athletics Club and hosts a youth athletics academy scheme, whose past participants have included Jessica Ennis, while rugby union championship side Rotherham Titans train there daily.
The stdium is also used for a ‘growing’ number of conferences and exhibitions, meetings and seminars, which account for 30 per cent of business and brought in £270,000 over the last year.
Don Valley Stadium general manager Pat Smith said: “The events programme for Don Valley Stadium for the next year and beyond is a varied and diverse schedule that incorporates sporting, educational and commercial activities throughout the venue.
“Not only do we have a busy events programme for the public to enjoy, but the stadium is home to numerous clubs and associations which use the facility week in, week out.”
She added: “The facility balances elite and community sports and non sports events usage with activities for all ages and abilities from athletics and gymnastics to indoor bowls and remote control car racing.”
Sheffield International Venues, which runs Don Valley Stadium, says the facility attracts attendances of up to 266,000 each year.
Other sports events include the Varsity rugby union match between the city’s universities, boxing events, a Festival of Athletics day, school sports days and the Care Home Olympics.
Non-sporting events for 2012 include computer fairs, paper craft shows, wedding shows, National Bonsai exhibition, food expo, company team briefings, property auctions, Christmas and birthday parties, team building days, Asian weddings, model car racing, small room bookings and office rental.
The stadium’s indoor area is used as an exam venue by both Sheffield and Hallam universities and other educational bodies.
The company said 1,000 people are also regular users of the stadium’s gym.
