Journey to Sheffield will be slashed to 30 minutes

After all the millions of pounds and thousands of hours spent developing Doncaster Sheffield Airport, it comes down to this couple.

Chris and Catherine Turner are typical Sheffielders who live in Handsworth and enjoying jetting off for sunshine breaks in Europe.

They were at the airport for a flight to Tenerife on Monday – the same day the FARRRS link road was officially opened and renamed Great Yorkshire Way.

The £56m three-mile route, between the M18 and Doncaster Sheffield Airport, is set to slash journey times from Sheffield to just 30 minutes for 1.1m people. It also makes the trip much more direct.

So, given the choice of East Midlands, Manchester Airport, Leeds Bradford and a host of others, would they choose Doncaster?

That’s a resounding “yes” from Chris, aged 65.

He said: “I think it will make a big difference for people from Sheffield. You’ll no longer have to have to use all those confusing little roads. We’ve parked outside the terminal for £29 – at East Midlands it costs £50.

“Where we live in Handsworth was actually under the flight path of Sheffield City Airport so it was very noisy, we had friends in Brinsworth, Rotherham, who also suffered from noise. So for us, we’re happy to call this airport our own.”

The Great Yorkshire Way is set to create 20,000 jobs and bring up to £1.7bn of investment, council chiefs say. And 6.2m people now live within an hour’s drive.
