Captured: a slice of Sheffield spirit
FROM the bustle of Sheffield’s wholesale markets opening before dawn, to the crammed city nightlife streets, the ‘spirit’ of Sheffield is a diverse thing indeed.
But 24 one-minute films show just a slice of it, featuring everything from swimming at Bradfield baths to a night out on West Street.
Some of the odder clips – each representing one hour of the day – follow a pork sandwich around the city at lunchtime, or see people skiing down suburban streets laden with snow.
Crookes dad Dominic Green was commissioned to create the films, with Sheffield the only English city outside London to take part in unusual Dutch project City OneMinutes.
He said: “They are quite a mixed collection of clips – it’s so hard to pick a favourite, I’d have a different answer each day.
“The people who’ve got involved with this have been absolutely wonderful, even if it was just those following while I had a hot roast pork sandwich stuck on the camera.”
From Brussels to Baghdad, the project makes a portrait of places within over 100 cities to capture their unique aspects in a variety of filming styles. Dominic, who was commissioned by The University of Sheffield, said there was ‘so much more’ which could not fit in the films and he hoped it had captured a ‘window’ of the city.
