HOMECOMING celebrations were due to take place today for South Yorkshire soldiers after a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Members of Third Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment’s Corunna Company have been stationed in one of the most remote parts of Helmand Province, Lashkar Gah Durai, since March.

The company includes soldiers from Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley and is commanded by former Westbourne School pupil Major Ed Colver, aged 35, who grew up near Dungworth.

The company was in the advance party for the current Afghanistan deployment, the rest of which is due to return to the UK next month.

Wives, girlfriends, families and friends of Corunna Company soldiers have been invited to the homecoming event, at Battlesbury Barracks, Warminster, where Third Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment is based.

During the tour, members of Corunna Company mounted checkpoints and went on operations including a dramatic raid on a Taliban-controlled village which led to the seizure of 300 kilogrammes of explosives. They also raided other bomb factories and captured an insurgent commander.

But the company was also hit by tragedy when six of its soldiers were killed after their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb.
