ONE of the most successful mountain bikers of all time, Steve Peat, who lives in Chapeltown, will open the Sheffield Hand Centre at the Northern General Hospital tomorrow (Friday).

The three times World Cup champion has suffered numerous injuries to his hands and wrists during his career and only this season suffered a broken wrist and had to ride with a brace for several races.

The Sheffield centre is designed to offer world-class treatment of hand and lower arm injuries. It is primarily for daycare cases but offers expertise in orthopaedic and plastic surgery.

Three times as many patients can now be treated by a consultant surgeon.
