Children from South Yorkshire school caught up in terror attack

A group of pupils from Herringthorpe Junior School in Rotherham had reportedly gone on a trip to Westminister today where a number of people were killed and injured in an attack.

A spokeswoman for the school confirmed none of the party were hurt.

She said: "We are receiving a lot of calls from concerned parents this evening as you would imagine but we can say everyone is safe and well."

Scotland Yard said four people, including an armed police officer and a man believed to be the attacker, died in a terrorist incident near the UK's Houses of Parliament.

Mark Rowley, acting deputy commissioner and head of counter terrorism at the Metropolitan Police, said the attack started when a car was driven over Westminster Bridge and hit up to 20 people, including three police officers who were on their way back from a commendation ceremony.

He said after the car crashed, a man armed with a knife "continued the attack and tried to enter Parliament."

He then stabbed an officer protecting Parliament before being shot by police.

Prime Minister Theresa May is to chair a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee later tonight.
