PROUD parents have spoken of their unexpected festive surprise - when their babies came on Christmas Day.

Sheffield’s Jessop Wing maternity unit delivered ‘around the usual’ number of births yesterday.

But for some of the new parents who were not expecting their newborns for another day or two, it meant an unexpected change of their festive schedules.

Phillip Mackley, aged 32, whose partner Stephanie Mansell, 31, gave birth to Eva at around 6.30am, said the birth of his first child was ‘a big Christmas present’.

Eva was born a healthy 6lbs 3oz.

Phillip, of Hillsborough, added: “It’s amazing to be a dad. Stephanie was due on December 28th and we had been planning to spend Christmas at my mum and dad’s house.

“We had Stephanie’s older son, Ben, who is nine, with us and were ready for the celebrations but he had to go to his gran’s while we were up all night.

“Stephanie is doing very well.”

Meanwhile, Mandy Kempton, aged 26, of Gleadless, gave birth to 7lbs 6oz Rosie-Lee at 6am on Christmas Day - who was also three days early.

She said: “It was a bit of a surprise. I’m feeling fine - I’ve had three others. I had been planning to spend Christmas with my other children - I’ve two daughters aged five and 19 months, and a son aged four - and can’t wait to get home.”

And Elsecar couple Paige Kynoch and Blake Windsor’s baby son Kaleb Anthony was born at 2.12am, weighing 6lbs 5oz.

Karen Drabble, midwife manager at the Jessop Wing, said: “It’s always a lovely atmosphere on Christmas Day because everyone’s happy.

“We have around 20 births a day and by lunchtime there were nine, so it was around the usual number.”
