LAST year snow prompted the cancellation of the Magical Christmas at the Botanical Gardens.
Then last Friday the opening night was almost called off because of rain and wind.
Organiser Kevin Cheetham said: “There were around 1,000 there on Friday when at one point I didn’t think we would get anyone turning up because the weather was so bad.
“There were lots of challenges to overcome, such as problems with the power because it was so wet and windy, but they were sorted and we were still able to stage a quality event.
“We had to cancel last year’s event because of the snow so we didn’t want the weather to hamper us again. Fortunately, Saturday was dry and a few thousand turned up.”
The fifth Christmas spectacular saw the gardens lit up, the singing of carols, children’s rides and a miniature steam train.
Jeannette Jones, of Hunters Bar, who took young relatives, said: “This has been just what I needed to feel Christmassy.
“It will be something all young children here will remember – it really is magical for them.”
