City hospitals are best in the North

SHEFFIELD’S hospitals were today named the very best in the North of England.
The city’s five adult hospitals - the Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Weston Park, Jessop Wing and Charles Clifford - have achieved top ratings in the national Good Hospital Guide, which lists them among the best in the country.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospitals, is named Trust of the Year for the North in the guide by independent healthcare analysts Dr Foster Intelligence.
The Good Hospital Guide, which analysed every acute treatment hospital in England, based its ranking on mortality rates, quality of care for key operations and patient satisfaction.
Sheffield came top out of 51 acute hospital trusts across the North. Other awards were also given in London, the Midlands, and the South of England.
Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield, who underwent an emergency operation to have a brain tumour removed at the Royal Hallamshire in August, said: “From my personal experience - and that of many other people in Sheffield - our hospitals are a great asset to the city, with tremendous staff working for them.”
Trust chief executive Sir Andrew Cash added: “It is particularly pleasing because the title of hospital Trust of the Year is independently assessed and only awarded to an organisation which demonstrates excellence in the things which really matter to patients - including safety, quality of care, waiting times, cleanliness of hospitals and how responsive a trust is to its patients.”
Jemma Mosely, aged 22, from Wharncliffe Side in Sheffield, said the care she received when having her first baby at the Jessop Wing was second to none.
She said: “The midwives were really caring. They put me at ease and were very reassuring during the birth.
“The ward was always kept clean and all the staff - from cleaners to doctors - were always smiling and polite.”
Grandmother-of-five Bernie Baker, 73, from Dore, suffered a fall in her kitchen in March.
She said: “All the staff were very caring and couldn’t have done more.
“Luckily all I suffered was bruising but I underwent many different tests all done with care and professionalism. I couldn’t have been in better hands.”
Maureen Youel, 70, from Staincross in Barnsley, said the professionals who treated her cancer at Weston Park gave her ‘the chance to watch her three gorgeous granddaughters grow up’.
She said: “I’m still here enjoying my life and it is all down to the care and treatment I received at Weston Park hospital following the diagnosis of a tumour in my oesophagus.”
