Cloud Rock Man adds school steel

Students arriving at newly rebuilt Bradfield School in Worrall are greeted by Cloud Rock Man.

The 2.5m stainless steel statue was created by Gateshead-based artist Joseph Hillier as a focalpoint of the redevelopment project.

He built it from over 14 months using 2,000 pieces of laser cut steel, inspired by the city’s industrial heritage and the school’s location on the edge of the moors. “I was first invited to Bradfield School in the bleakest winter snow,” he said. “One of the things that really stood out was the dry stone walls crossing the landscape.”

Joseph was commissioned by a panel of staff, students and contractors VINCI Construction UK.
