Club rapist faces long jail term

A cabaret artist has been warned he is facing a lengthy jail term after he was found guilty of raping a 22-year-old woman while dressed as Frankenstein character Herman Munster during a Halloween party at a Sheffield swingers’ club.

Jeremy Frazer Newsome Smith, aged 45, was told to get his affairs in order by Judge Peter Kelson QC after he was convicted of rape by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court.

As the verdict was returned, Smith’s supporters shouted out ‘disgusting’ and ‘this is totally wrong’ from the public gallery.

But Judge Kelson told the jury had the victim and her family been in court he was sure she would have been ‘saying thank you from the bottom of her heart’.

The court heard Smith attacked the woman in a mirrored room at Attercliffe sex club La Chambre last October.

He denied rape and said the pair had got on well and had consensual sex.

Smith, formerly of Tingley, Wakefield, but now from Regent Street, London, will be sentenced next month after the preparation of a probation report.
