STRONG competition from bidders saw the price of a clockwork train set hit £3,400 at a specialist auction sale in Sheffield.

Strong competition from the room, telephones and internet saw the 1895 Marklin 0 gauge train set go to a private buyer on the Continent at the sale held at Sheffield Auction Gallery.

In the collectables section a 1920s Shell Petrol globe, found on the site of an old city garage and and still in its original box, made £620. A 1970s rock autograph and memorabilia album with names such as Mark Bolan and David Bowie secured £420.

The sale also included the first part of the Greenhill Collection of unmade plastic model kits with all 150 lots finding new owners.

Director Elizabeth Dashper said: “We are investing a huge amount of time and effort in sourcing single owner collections and fresh items to bring to the market which is starting to pay dividends”

The next specialist toys and collectables auction at the gallery on May 11 includes part two of the Greenhill Collection.
