EVEN going to the toilet can be a green experience on an allotment site in Sheffield.
A compost toilet has been installed at the Trade Base Allotments in Windmill Lane, Wincobank, for the benefit of organic growers.
And the waste will not be wasted, being used on fruit trees, bushes and flowers.
The project is backed by Sheffield City Council’s North East Community Assembly.
Allotment project development worker Kim Hinchcliffe said: “The main incentive for applying for this funding was to reduce our carbon emissions.
“Before the installation of the compost toilet we had a chemical portable toilet which required a weekly service from a lorry, amassing a lot of very environmentally unfriendly mileage. Not to mention the toxic chemicals used.
“As organic growers we promote environmentally friendly working, and were keen to find something more suitable.
“The new toilet is great as it means our project is no longer contributing to climate change.”
The allotments are open to all local people, including those with mental health and learning difficulties.
