Council launches hunt for new firm to run Sheffield Half Marathon

A new organiser is being sought by Sheffield Council to put on the Sheffield Half Marathon next year.

The authority says it ‘respects’ the decision of Sheffield Marathon Trust and Sheffield Half Marathon Ltd to step down after this year’s event was cancelled at the last minute.

The race in April was abandoned with runners waiting on the start line after water supplies failed to arrive.

After the race, supplier Water Direct said it had not been paid, although event organisers said they were not told to pay beforehand.

Coun Isobel Bowler, council cabinet member for sport, said: “In the last 33 years, the trust has contributed
£1.5 million to charity. This is something I know has benefited many Sheffield people.

“We are aware of their decision not to organise the 2015 event and fully respect that.

“We have started to seek organisers who have a track record in delivering large road races across the UK.

“We are conducting a bid process with several event organisers who can operate the event at no cost to the council.

“We are keen to ensure the 2015 event continues to support local charities and remains a fantastic sporting event.”
