Sid, aged 52, was back cheering on his favourites to a 1-0 victory over Leyton Orient for the first time at home since suffering horrific injuries in an attack by rival fans.

He has battled back from head injuries sustained in an unprovoked attack by yobs after Wednesday’s game last August in Hartlepool.

Sid, of Swinton, who has been treated at a special unit in Chester, recovered sufficiently to watch the Owls play Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and away against Tranmere before returning to Hillsborough.

Supporters on fans’ website Owlstalk welcomed Sid back at Hillsborough. One said: “Brilliant that he will be there on Saturday and has made great strides towards recovery.”

The ‘Give Sid The Ball’ campaign was launched to make him guest of honour at the Steel City derby at Hillsborough and present him with the match ball.

Paul Bennett, 24, of Hartlepool, was jailed for three years for the attack on Sid.
