A Sheffield man was set to appear in court today charged with attempted murder after a man was rushed to hospital with multiple stab wounds.

The 48-year-old victim was stabbed during a violent incident on Elm Road, Beighton.

His condition was last night described as critical but stable.

The suspect, 46-year-old Michael Mallinder, from Sheffield, was arrested at the scene on Friday and was charged with attempted murder yesterday.

Mallinder was due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates Court for a hearing today.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to an address on Elm Road in Beighton at around 10pm on Friday to reports of a disturbance.

“A 48-year-old man sustained multiple stab wounds during the incident and was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.”

He added: “Michael Mallinder was arrested at the scene and has been charged with attempted murder.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

Neighbours in Beighton told The Star they were shocked by the incident. Elm Road resident Zac Hunter said it was the first time anything of its kind had happened in the area since he moved there.

He said: “It’s shocking and it’s horrible. I didn’t see the incident, the first I knew about it was the police cars in the road on Saturday morning.

“I’m very surprised. I have lived here for a year and a half and I have never seen anything like this happen before.

“Fingers crossed the man who was hurt pulls through.”

A woman who lives opposite the scene and works nearby, who did not wish to be named, said: “There were about seven police cars, two vans and an ambulance in the road.

“We have had some burglaries in the area recently, but nothing like this has happened before.”
