A MAN left fighting for life after an attack in Sheffield city centre is in a critical but stable condition in hospital today.

The 44-year-old Sheffield man was assaulted outside Lloyds No. 1 bar on Division Street in the early hours of Sunday.

Police said there was an ‘altercation’ at around 12.30am, and when officers arrived at the crime scene - one of the busiest streets for revellers on nights out - they discovered a man with a serious head injury.

He was given emergency first aid at the scene before paramedics rushed him to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where his condition yesterday was said to have stabilised.

Medics said he was still in a critical condition.

Detectives are still piecing together exactly what happened and want anyone with information to come forward.

Division Street is served by CCTV cameras, which may have captured the incident.

Shocked revellers on nights out in the city centre were the first to raise the alarm and told police officers what they saw of the incident.

Police sealed off the area outside Lloyds on Sunday while police scenes of crime experts combed the area for clues.

A white tent was erected over the spot where the injured man’s body was found, in a bid to preserve the scene and any evidence left behind to link the attacker to the offence.

Police asked staff at Lloyds to close the bar during the early stages of the probe.

The attack, near the Jess Ennis gold post box, happened at an area close to bars and restaurants popular with weekend revellers.
