SHEFFIELD Wednesday striker Gary Madine appeared in court on Tuesday accused of assaulting a man in a city centre nightclub.

Pleading not guilty, the 21-year-old’s bail conditions were adjusted so he could attend yesterday’s civic reception at the Town Hall in honour of the team’s promotion to the Championship.

Sheffield magistrates heard Madine is accused of punching a young man called Daniel Beresford in the Paris bar in Carver Street at around 1am on February 5.

His solicitor, Lesley Goodman, said Madine intends to argue he was acting in self-defence.

The footballer will appear before magistrates again in July, when his case will be committed to Sheffield Crown Court.

Madine, who faces one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, spoke only to confirm his name and address, in Middlewood, and to indicate his plea.

His bail conditions are that he must not enter any retail premises within half a mile of Sheffield city centre, go to Carver Street or contact Mr Beresford.
