Verbal abuse of Sheffield parking wardens have almost doubled over two years - and trade union leaders fear reports are just ‘the tip of the iceberg’.

In the 12 months to June this year, there were 33 recorded incidents of verbal attacks on the council’s 58 parking attendants - up from 17 two years previously. The number of physical attacks rose from five to seven.

The GMB union believes wardens are on the receiving end of motorists’ frustrations about increased council charges.

“Our members are simply doing their jobs,” said organiser Peter Davies.
