PETROL was poured through the letterbox of a house in Dronfield before attempts were made to set the property alight.
Detectives are now investigating the attempted arson attack in Hassop Close.
A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called after the homeowner heard the letterbox rattle and got a strong smell of petrol.
“They noticed petrol had been put through the letterbox and there were scorch marks on the outside where offenders had attempted to ignite it.
“No-one in the house was injured.”
Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area at about 11.45pm on Thursday, or knows someone with unexplained burns to their hands and arms, should call Derbyshire Police on 101.
