Police are hunting a gunman after a shooting in broad daylight in Sheffield this morning.

The incident happened in Spital Lane, Burngreave, between 11.10am and 11.30am today on a walkway leading up to blocks of flats.

The 21-year-old victim has suffered what police describe as a ‘non life-threatening gunshot injury’.

Police are now trying to trace a car seen in the area at the time of the incident.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Additional patrols are in place in the community to provide reassurance to local residents.

“If anyone witnessed any suspicious activity in the Spital Lane area between 11.10am and 11.30am, please call 101 quoting incident number 355 of August 13, 2015.

“Police are particularly interested in tracing a small dark-coloured vehicle that was seen driving at speed in that area around the time of the incident.”

Shocked residents described hearing a ‘bang’ around lunchtime and seeing an injured man lying on the ground surrounded by passers-by.

One man, who asked not to be named, said two passing council workers alerted the police to the incident.

He said police had gone door-to-door around the flats looking for witnesses, with a cordon put up around the scene until mid-afternoon.

The man said incidents of this nature are ‘very, very rare’ in the area.
