Police officers are trying to identify men and women who featured in a TV programme about benefit cheats and criminals operating in Sheffield.

Channel 5 screened a programme based on the findings of an undercover reporter who spent time in Sheffield and found out about those abusing the benefits system and committing crime to make extra cash.

Professional shoplifters who steal to order were shown confessing to their crimes, with one man admitting he steals every day except ‘Giro day’.

They were also shown hawking their goods outside pubs.

Another man was captured tampering with an electricity meter.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “We are in consultation with the broadcaster in a bid to obtain footage, identify offenders and bring them to justice.”

Anyone with information about those in the programme should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
