Police step up shoplifting patrols

“High visibility” police patrols will be carried out in shopping centres in South Yorkshire as part of an operation to counter shoplifting in the run-up to Christmas.

Police officers, community support officers, crime reduction officers, Special Constables and cadets will be on duty, along with ‘cardboard cops’ in shops

Numbers of shoplifting offences dropped 4% last month compared with the same month last year.

Chief Insp Gwyn Thomas said: “Shoplifting is not a victimless crime, it affects businesses, communities and can damage high streets.”
