Bikes fitted with GPS trackers are being used in Sheffield to reduce thefts of bicycles in the city.
The ‘bait bikes’ are being used by South Yorkshire Police to help officers track down bike thieves.
Over the last month 35 thefts have been reported compared to 74 the previous month.
Chief Inspector Jayne Forrest said: “The use of tracker bikes, combined with patrols and general vigilance around these crimes, have helped to halve this type of crime over the last month.
“I think this sends out a clear message to people intent on committing crime in the city centre that we have ways and means to target you and bring you to justice.
“We will not become complacent and we are asking the public to do the same.”
