Police watchdog not launching car crash probe

THE police watchdog has declined to launch an investigation into a car crash in which a dad died on a Sheffield road following a pursuit by officers.

Darren Hollingsworth, aged 38, of Midhopestones, suffered fatal injuries when the Vauxhall Corsa he was driving veered across Yewtrees Lane in Bolsterstone and smashed into a tree.

Shortly before the crash, Darren was chased by police officers called out by a member of the public, who spotted him damaging a car on Kenworthy Road in nearby Stocksbridge.

A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission said the incident - which happened at just before 1am last Saturday - was referred to them by South Yorkshire Police.

“We wrote back to the force on August 20 to say it should be a local investigation,” the spokesman said.

“We are not investigating.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman added: “This incident was referred to the IPCC. The IPCC advised that the force carries out its own investigation, as is the case with all fatal collisions.”

Darren worked as a driller on construction sites and leaves a partner and young daughter.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
