Demolition started this week of the Edwardian Jessop Hospital, despite a long-running protest from conservationists.

The University of Sheffield says clearing the site is the only realistic option in making way for an £81m engineering complex.

But Valerie Bayliss, of the South Yorkshire group of the Victorian Society, said: “After all these months it is still astonishing that such a show of disdain could have been made for Sheffield’s heritage and the feelings of the local community.

“Similar levels of investment and employment would have been generated by a slightly modified scheme which included this grade II listed building.”
