TWO candidates are left in the running for the position of South Yorkshire Police’s new Chief Constable.

It is understood that David Crompton, West Yorkshire Police’s Deputy Chief Constable, and Stuart Hyde, Cumbria Constabulary’s Deputy Chief Constable, have been interviewed once and taken part in assessments.

But the panel deciding who gets the top job has been unable to decide between the pair.

There were originally three candidates for the job, but there are now only two being considered to replace incumbent Med Hughes.

South Yorkshire Police Authority will discuss the job vacancy at its next meeting next Friday.

In a report prepared for members, chief executive and treasurer Bill Wilkinson said the authority wanted to make an appointment as soon as possible and the two candidates could face a second interview by the full authority.
