A SHEFFIELD park was sealed off as police investigated a horrific late night attack which left the victim critically ill in hospital.

One shocked resident told The Star he went out to see what was happening after police cars headed to High Hazels Park, Darnall - and was standing just metres from the man when he was stretchered away by paramedics.

The man is in hospital where his condition was described as ‘critical but stable’.

The resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “Several police cars came by and I went out to see what was happening.

“It was horrific - I was standing about 10 or 15 metres away when the paramedics brought the casualty to a waiting ambulance.

“It looked as though he had been hit with a weapon and with some force. His head had swollen to twice its normal size.”

The resident said police set up a large cordon from the Logan Road entrance to the park and officers were searching the park and bins in the surrounding area.

The cordon was in place throughout yesterday.

Police have not revealed what they were looking for or whether they believe a weapon had been used in the assault.

They have also not revealed details of the circumstances of the attack.

But the resident said: “It’s very worrying - I am a father with several children and I do not want them going out and about in the evening if this kind of thing is going to happen.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed officers are investigating the attack, which happened at about 10pm on Monday. The victim, whose age has not been revealed, was in a ‘critical but stable condition’ in hospital.
