Woman on top of Hartshead Square multi-storey is spoken to by police officer

A woman was talked down from the edge of the roof at a multi-storey car park in Sheffield city centre.

Police cordoned off the area surrounding Hartshead Square at around 1.30pm today after reports of a woman at the top of the building.

After sealing off the scene an officer went to the top of the building and approached the lady, who was wearing a pink coat, at around 2.15pm.

The pair then spoke to one another for several minutes, as she stepped along a ledge above where the policeman was stood.

Dramatic scenes unfolded as she outstretched her arms and leaping into the clutches of the police officer to safety.

An ambulance first responder car arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. The cordon was removed at around 2.40pm and the car park was re-opened.

A shocked onlooker said: “I didn’t know what was going on at first, I was trying to get to the parking meter and the police told me to go away.

“I looked up and then I spotted her. Credit to South Yorkshire Police for talking her down.”
