Plans for a new affordable housing scheme in the Dearne Valley have been approved.

Planning chiefs at Barnsley Council gave the green light for the development of two sites adjacent to the Dearne Playhouse in Washington Road, Goldthorpe.

The scheme will involve demolishing existing two storey buildings and replacing them with two sets of five properties.

Each home will be three storeys high with an open plan kitchen and living area on the ground floor and a bedroom on each floor above.

Designers from award winning Sheffield-based architectural practice Coda Studios drew up the plans on behalf of applicants Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Adam Murray, Coda Planning director, said the scheme will help to breathe new life into the area.

He added: “We are extremely proud of the work we have been doing with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and are particularly pleased to see this application through to a successful conclusion.

“The development of affordable, eco-friendly properties in areas like Goldthorpe is vital to the future success of the Dearne Valley.”

The planning application shows there will be 12 vehicle parking spaces, along with 12 cycle spaces.

Councillors approved the project subject to a number of conditions.

The council planning decision notice said: “The development hereby permitted shall be begun before the expiration of three years from the date of this permission.”

It added that “in the interests of the amenities of local residents, construction or remediation work comprising the use of plant, machinery or equipment, or deliveries of materials shall only take place between the hours of 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and 9am to 2pm Saturdays and at no time on Sundays or bank holidays.

“No development shall take place until there has been submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority.”
