THE recovery of the archive documents of Loxley Silver Band showed that Derek Garner paid his first subs, 3d, in January 1942, just six days after his 13th birthday.
He is still there, and his 70 years continuous service have been marked with a lifetime membership.
The Garner family has been connected with the band since the 1920s, when Derek’s father joined.
Derek’s grandson, Dale, soprano cornet player with championship section Marsden Silver Band, was invited to join him and the rest of the Loxley band last Saturday at Woodseats Methodist Church, at its fifth annual concert, with musical director Lee Dunkley, which raised £1,260 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Derek, who lives in Loxley, first played the cornet and now plays E flat bass.
Spokesman Stuart Young said: “He is 83 now and is a mine of information. He can remember in minute detail back to when he first joined the band.”
The band rehearse every Monday and Thursday in Stanwood Methodist Church, Stannington Road.
