HORSERACING legend Frankie Detorri MBE will be guest of honour at a South Yorkshire village’s celebrations from 11am today.
The diminutive jockey has been lined up to unveil the latest blue plaques paying tribute to notable former residents of Firbeck, near Rotherham, at the village hall.
Frankie will unveil the honour to the late British Army officer Major General Anthony St Leger.
It is a particularly fitting tribute to the founder of the St Leger Stakes horse race, as Frankie will ride in the race which takes place at Doncaster racecourse later this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Ian Bonner, who is president of the Botanical Society of the British Isles, will unveil a blue plaque and pay tribute to phrenologist, botanist and evolutionary theorist Hewett Cottrell Watson at the ceremony.
Watson was a widely acknowledged authority on botanical science.
The celebration event has been organised by The Friends of Firbeck Hall.
