AMATEUR history enthusiasts took part in a preliminary archaeological study at a Sheffield green space in an attempt to find evidence of an ancient stone circle.

Members of the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners Group were joined by local residents for the survey at Loxley Common.

Project leader Roger Manktelow said: “It went brilliantly.

“We had a really good turn out of people and the weather was lovely.

“It looks as if there was a circle of small stones up there but we didn’t find evidence of a bigger one.

“However, there is still some work to do.”

He added: “We are going to evaluate what we found and we want to survey the whole of the area eventually.”

“We need to get the professionals to advise us on what we found but it is looking promising.”

About 15 people took part.
