A BID to break a world domino playing record at a Derbyshire pub drew a double blank - when only 57 people turned up.

The target for organisers of the event at the Hearty Oak pub in Dronfield Woodhouse was for 600 volunteers all to enjoy a 10-minute game of doms at exactly the same time.

To accommodate the players the pub had set up long lines of temporary tables and chairs in the car park, and had borrowed 150 sets of dominoes into the bargain.

But sadly the planned charity bonanza was a flop - hampered perhaps by chilly weather more suited to October than August.

The day was the brainchild of regular Bob Street, but he was forced to admit: “We didn’t get as many people as we’d hoped for.”

Bob said he’d got the idea while channel surfing one day and coming across a programme dedicated to Guinness world records.

“I thought I might be able to set some sort of record here for their book, and I came up with the plan for a giant domino session.”

The pub had done its bit to support the bid, organising a family fun day to attract the crowds complete with a bouncy castle, face painting, cake stall, barbecue and a pizza stand.

“We fell a long way short of our target - it wasn’t the greatest of days and perhaps the advance ticket sales should have told us something. But everyone who did come along had a good time,” Bob said.

But despite the modest turn out the event still raised £600 for Help for Heroes, the Royal National Institute for the Blind and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity Fund.
