THEY sliced on the ice with the greatest of ease... as young flower girls watched in awe from the sidelines.

Sheffield Arena has been transformed for an international showcase of Europe’s finest figure skating this week and the first session saw pairs put through their paces in the preliminary rounds.

Nearly 200 skaters from 40 countries, including the Czech Republic, Latvia, Turkey and the Ukraine, were among the couples who took to the ice to demonstrate their breathtaking skills in front of a panel of international judges who scrutinised their every move before revealing their scores.

Today the skaters – many of whom have competed at the Olympics – will perform to a Royal audience.

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, is attending to officiate at the European Figure Skating Championships’ official opening ceremony.

The competition continues tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.

The event will conclude with a gala performance on Sunday.
