A ‘Secret Millionaire’ who helped Sheffield charities was honoured this week by Hallam University.

Dr Chai Patel CBE, chair of HC-One, one of Britain’s biggest care home providers, joined students from the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at a graduation ceremony at the City Hall where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.

He was honoured for his 30 year career in the health and social care industry.

In 2011, he took part in the Channel 4 programme, The Secret Millionaire, focusing on the Gleadless Valley Community Forum and the Cathedral Archer Project, which supports the homeless.

In another ceremony, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, a campaigner for justice following the murder of her son Stephen 20 years ago, was awarded an honorary doctorate in law.

Hallam supports the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme, which addresses the lack of black men from low-income households pursuing a career among London law firms.
