PUPILS at a Sheffield infant school are in a willow wonderland – thanks to an environmental project.

Staff at Holt House Infants asked parent Tom Tay to design a willow tunnel in the grounds, after he completed a similar project in Millhouses Park.

Each of the 240 pupils at the Abbeydale school played a part in planting and weaving the tunnel, with help from the Forestry Commission.

Then the children had to wait patiently while the tunnel settled in – before they were finally able to walk through it.

Headteacher Helen Haynes said: “Now it’s ready there are three domes and two tunnels and it will be part of the children’s play every day. We have put matting down so it will be an all-weather facility. We asked the children last year what they would like to see improved at the school and they said they’d like more dens and magical places.

“The willow tunnel is perfect and will be an ideal place for play,” she added.
