Sheffield Hallam University launched its new Institute of Education today with a high profile conference on the current state of teacher training.

Keynote speaker was Professor Samantha Twiselton who called for an end to polarised arguments about future training methods.

The professor, founding director of the institute, argued that the best model for delivering training would be a partnership between schools and academia.

She called for a pragmatic approach that put the ‘deep and broad needs of children first’ in the light of a recently announced Government review into the quality of teacher training courses.

And the professor added: “While there is still the need for debate and reform, the arguments have become polarised, when the best approach has to be a partnership which combines cutting edge teaching practice in schools with the academic research rigour that only universities can provide.”

The event included a panel debate where some 300 delegates could pose questions to leading national figures in education.
