The real Rugby World Cup may begin on Friday night at Twickenham but for a group of budding young internationals the fun has already started.

Boys from Mylnhurst school, Sheffield, Barlborough Hall school, Barlborough, and Chesterfield’s St Peter and St Paul school competed in a rugby festival on Thursday at Mount St Mary’s in Spinkhill.

However, instead of playing as individual schools the players – aged 9-11 – were mixed into different teams and assigned a nation.

‘England’ eventually came out on top after five tough games against ‘Scotland’, ‘New Zealand’, ‘Wales’, ‘Ireland’ and ‘Australia’.

Players from Rotherham Titans refereed the games and coached the teams with the England v Scotland match being a particularly high-standard encounter.

The aim of the festival was for the players to improve their skills and build friendships with boys from other schools.
