Sheffield City Council has joined together with Sheffield College through its Streets Ahead initiative to launch a Supported Internship Programme at its Olive Grove depot in Heeley.

Six young people, aged between 16 and 24, have joined the Streets Ahead team to gain skills in a variety of areas including IT, commercial, office support for highway maintenance, vehicle fleet and stores.

David Lincoln, a job coach for Sheffield College, is based on site and works with the Streets Ahead teams to ensure the interns are matched to jobs they are suited to.

He said: “It is great to see the interns gaining confidence and learning new skills. The experiences will hopefully help them to secure employment in the future.”

Helen Johnson, Streets Ahead’s Community and Employee Engagement Officer added, “We are extremely proud and delighted that the interns are now working with us and overcoming challenges, not just in a working environment, but also within social situations.

“They have settled in well and are already making a great contribution to our day to day work.”

Each intern is also working through a study programme which is personalised for their individual needs and includes different employability skills as well as qualifications in English and Maths. It will be completed in July.
