Sheffield College students stage Shakespeare inspired show

Sheffield College students are performing a Shakespeare inspired show next month as part of their professional skills development.

Second-year foundation degree students will be staging a modern version of Cymbeline developed by the innovative Kneehigh theatre company. The entertaining play combines comedy, tragedy and music, and will be shown in the new drama theatre at The Sheffield College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street.

It tells the tale of an unfit king who rules over a divided Britain and is consumed with grief after the kidnapping of his two children and the death of his wife. Behind the throne, a power hungry figure plots to seize power by poisoning the King.

Jo Beadle, Performing Arts Lecturer, said: “This is a gripping play that takes the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions including fury and humour, and deals with the themes of innocence and jealousy. It also features puppets and songs, some of which have been composed by the students.”

She added: “It’s a great chance for our students to develop the confidence and professional skills that they will need for their future careers, and is based on one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays.”

The performances take place at 7.15pm on March 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th in the new drama studio at Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street, Hillsborough.
