A consultation has started into whether Ecclesall Infant School should be expanded to 90 places per year, starting next September, as well as widening the age range to take children up to Year 6, or age 11.

Sheffield Council says the changes are needed to meet demand for places as the population grows.

The wider age range - which would create a new ‘through school’ - would be introduced on a phased basis over a four-year period, with the first Year 3 class likely to be in 2018.

Discussions will also take place about adding early years provision for children aged two to four.

However, Ecclesall Junior School’s intake would reduce if the proposals went ahead, a consultation document issued by Sheffield Council says.

Other primaries expanded recently include Greystones, Lowfield and Nether Edge. An extra reception class was provided at Dobcroft Infant last September and a further reception class is being added at Ecclesall Infant this September.

Measures are also being taken to create more secondary school places, including building a new academy on the old Bannerdale Centre site.

Workshops are to be held that anyone can attend, covering the impact of the proposals on the site and the surrounding area.

The first is at Ecclesall Infant on June 7, from 6pm to 7.30pm, and the second is at Ecclesall Junior on June 14 from 6pm to 7.30pm.

The consultation runs until June 22. It is expected the plans will go before Sheffield Council’s cabinet committee in July.

Planning permission to revamp the buildings would then be needed if cabinet members approve the scheme.
