Students from Barnsley College were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements at the eighth annual Barnsley College Excellence Awards.
The awards ceremony, held at Barnsley Metrodome, saw a total of 27 awards presented, including awards for each college department and cross college awards such as Apprentice of the Year, Adult Learner of the Year, Youth Achievement and Youth Progress.
On the night the Overall Achievement Award was presented to one student selected from all those who won an award during the evening and this year’s overall winner was 17-year-old Rhys Proud, from Royston.
Rhys, who is studying A Levels, was the winner of the Sixth Form College Award and impressed the judges with his dedication and enthusiasm. He has become an outstanding ambassador for the Sixth Form and has recently accepted a place to study Psychology at Cambridge University.
In his nomination, Personal Progress Mentor Maria Sutton said: “Rhys is an exemplary student, both in attitude to study and attention to detail. His positivity and motivation to achieve despite his disability is inspiring and he has proved to be a superb role model and a brilliant college representative.”
Guests enjoyed a three-course meal, prepared by Glorious Catering, at the sponsored event and were entertained by students from the Media, Music and Performance department and University Campus Barnsley.
The keynote speaker for the evening was Vice Chair of Governors, Nick Bowen. Nick gave a passionate speech about ambition and the influence of education on young people’s lives.
Nick said: “It was a real pleasure for me to speak at the Excellence Awards to pay tribute to the leaders, the staff and, of course, to the students for everything they have achieved and everything they do to make Barnsley College outstanding. Barnsley is a hive of education activity and excellence, and should be very proud of its college which is at the heart of the town centre transformation.”
The event also saw Vice Principal for Teaching, Learning and Student Support, Jenny Miccoli, give a short speech about EnRich, a charity set up in the name of the late Richard Tolson, a much respected tutor at the college.
Barnsley College Principal Chris Webb added: “As always, our awards evening was a fantastic way to celebrate the amazing achievements of our students over the past year. This event is always one of the highlights of the year and it is thanks to the kind support of our sponsors that it is made possible. This is my first Excellence Awards as Principal and, as ever, I am proud to be part of such a dynamic and high-achieving college. This ceremony provides a fitting tribute to those students who go above and beyond in their studies and in college life.”
