Star David is over the moon after photo contest win

Rotherham pupil David Tune has won the Schools National Astrophotography Competition with a picture of the moon.

The 15-year-old’s picture was selected by BBC expert Mark Thompson – one of the presenters from Stargazing Live.

His school, Wales High, will now receive sets of astronomy books plus a talk in school by Mark.

David said: “I’ve always been interested in astronomy, and got my first telescope about four years ago, and have taken many photos since then.

“To get this picture, I actually started by using a special camera which takes video, like a webcam.

“I recorded several of these videos through my telescope, before using special software to combine them into especially sharp images.

“I then combined them into a mosaic in Photoshop. I couldn’t believe it when I won. I never thought I’d come first.”
