Steady progress at primary

Three years of improving standards have led to a north Sheffield primary school being rated ‘good’ by inspectors.

The verdict means that Windmill Hill Primary at Chapeltown has moved up a grade since its last check up in 2011.

Progress made by all pupils throughout the school was found to be good and compared favourably with national statistics.

The majority of teaching was good with some that was outstanding, and as a result the children’s attainment levels were above the national average by the time they left school.

Windmill Hill was found to be a happy secure place for pupils to learn, where they felt extremely safe and well cared for by all the staff.

Children behaved well in lessons, were polite and courteous around school and were keen enthusiastic learners.

The school’s curriculum was rich and broad with many stimulating learning opportunities, with senior staff committed to bring about a continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

They had a clear view about what the school did well and where it could do even better.

Teachers were fully behind the leadership and were equally keen to achieve the school’s shared goals.

Governors meanwhile were well informed about the school’s work and were extremely supportive, robustly holding it to account.

But inspectors felt not enough teaching was outstanding and a small amount of lessons still needed to improve.

Attendance levels were adversely affected by a small proportion of persistent truants, while opportunities were missed for pupils to apply their maths skills to solving real life problems.

Headteacher Peter Escott said: “I am extremely proud of the work all the staff have done over the last two years since the last Ofsted report. All our children have shown that they are enthusiastic learners and are well supported by their parents.”
