A SHEFFIELD University medical student beat 17 competitors to win the regional heat of a national surgical skills competition.

Abhilash Sudarsanam, a fourth year medical student, will represent Yorkshire at the grand final of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Lister Surgical Skills Competition, which takes place in Edinburgh in February.

Abhilash said: “It feels great.

“I found competing to be a truly rewarding experience.

“While it was challenging, I was fairly confident thanks to my past experience assisting in several surgeries right from the second year of medical school, I knew I stood a good chance.”

The champion at the grand final wins a trip to a skills centre in Hamburg, Germany.
