Engineering students from Barnsley College took to the track under the expert eye of top rally driver Dave Hemingway.

The teenagers were invited to a special day held at the Chris Birkbeck Rally School in North Yorkshire.

The youngsters were briefed on the basic skills of rally driving and were then given the chance to take the wheel themselves.

They were introduced to the basics of rallying, from handbrake turns to controlled opposite-lock slides, coached by instructors in specially prepared Ford Focus cars.

The students had varying prior experience - some had grass and motorcycle rally experience, while three of the students had never driven a vehicle before.

Students were then given the chance to be a passenger in a MK2 Ford Escort, with Dave Hemingway, to appreciate the thrill of a professional driver’s skill.

Finally the students were invited to look over the rally preparation workshops.
