A SHEFFIELD preparatory school will close early tomorrow (Friday) to allow staff to attend the funeral of its deputy headteacher who died suddenly.

Les Guntrip, aged 52, had joined Ashdell in Fulwood Road in 2003 and was also head of maths at the school, which teaches girls up to the age of 11.

He died in his sleep while on a trip to Wales over the bank holiday. The post mortem indicated natural causes.

“He was a dedicated teacher,” said Ashdell head Anne Camm. “His sense of humour was fantastic and he always had a story to tell.”

Mr Guntrip, who lived in Walkley and leaves a partner, Janine, was brought up in Nottingham, graduated from Leeds University and taught in Whitby before working in Oman and Hong Kong.

He came to Sheffield from a post in Surrey.

The school has opened a book of condolence and a special assembly is being held for staff and older pupils.

The funeral is at Grenoside Crematorium at 3.30pm.
